James Dampney of AdelaideNow just wrote an article on Patty’s role with Australia’s national basketball team. Here’s a snippet from the article:
Earlier this decade, the Australian men’s basketball team was facing a crisis.
For the preceding 20 years, the Boomers had been blessed with some world-class point guards, including multiple-Olympians Shane Heal, CJ Bruton and Phil Smyth.
But with Heal ending his international career after the 2004 Olympics and Bruton nearing the end of his time in national colours, there was genuine concern over who would take over the playmaking duties.
Around that time, however, word started to emerge of a lightning quick, pint-sized, indigenous point guard learning the trade in Canberra.
Last night was a big night for Patty Mills, DeMar DeRozan and Terrence Williams. Patty was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers, DeMar was selected by the Toronto Raptors, and Terrence is now a New Jersey Net. Each player is now headed out for press conferences with their respective new teams.
In the next couple of days we’ll be bringing you reaction from each team’s bloggers, as well as behind the scenes footage of the draft from each of the players. Each guy was armed with their own flip cam for draft day, so they probably all have some great behind the scenes footage for us. Congrats again to Patty, DeMar and Terrence for making it to the big leagues.
